László Kontler is Head of History at The Central European University in Budapest. Born in Budapest, 31 July 1959 married with two daughters. Permanent address: Budapest. László Kontler was born three years after the abortive 1956 Hungarian revolution against Soviet rule. His formative years were spent during the "soft" tyranny of "goulash communism". He represents the first generation of scholars in the formerly Communist-dominated Europe who display ruthless, independent analysis - a virtue some of these scholars' own professors might have regarded as an expensive luxury.
