Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989) is one of the most interesting contemporary Austrian writers, the author of a great number of novels and plays, the bearer of numerous literary awards and distinctions. Having studied music, worked as a journalist and afterwards as a free-lance writer, he is well known to readers and viewers all over the world. Actors and actresses enjoy performing his plays, notwithstanding that directors are often overawed by his peculiar style, his provocative attitude to the world: the combination of obscure, destructive passions and witty jokes and even, though rarely, the joy of living.
