Bertold Brecht was born in Augsburg in 1890 and he died in Berlin in 1956. During the war he lived as an emigrant in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the USA, and Switzerland. He was the founder of the "Berliner Ensemble". Among his numerous plays were The Three-penny Opera, The Life of Galileo, The Good Person of Sezuan, Mother Courage and Her Children, Mister Puntila and His Man Matti, The Caucasian Chalk Circle. His artistic development towards ‘epic theatre', towards the "scientific theatre", can only be comprehended through a familiarity with his early works in which the important themes took shape: Baal, Drums in the Night, In the Jungle of Cities, Man Equals Man... These plays are merciless in indicating the flood that is menacing the bourgeois world. At first there is still some land, but already covered with puddles, which soon turn into deep pools and streams. And after that, nothing remains but the dark waters, with islands that soon break down. Bertold Brecht, 1954
